God Made the Sun, Moon, and Stars

"God made the two great lights...he made the stars...to separate
light from darkness..." (Genesis 1:16-18)

Main Point: "The heavens tell out the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1a) .

Objects Needed: a magazine, with three special "ads" stapled in to look as if they're part of the magazine. This being Wisconsin, we're advertising milk, but you may substitute whatever it is that your region produces. The first "ad" reads, "Milk Helps build powerful bodies", the second reads, "Milk tastes good" and the third shows a famous athlete/actor/media star with a glass of milk.

Hello! I've brought along a neat magazine to show you this morning. It's got all kinds of interesting articles in it. Let's have a look.

Here's an article about ***. And here's an ad for milk. It says that milk builds powerful bodies

The next article is on ***. And what do you know, here's another ad for milk. This ad tells us that milk tastes good.

Boy, the dairy farmers are really encouraging us to drink milk!

Now here's a story about ***. Another ad! It's not just the dairy farmers who are encouraging us to drink milk, this ad has a movie star telling us to drink it too!

We weren't really looking for ads in this magazine, were we? Yet somehow as we wandered through the magazine, we just kept running across ads for milk.

(Close magazine and put it away.) Boys and girls, as we live through our busy days, often we aren't really looking for God either. And yet somehow we keep finding signs of Him. But He's not trying to sell us something; no, He's trying to give us something.

We can feel the warm spring sun on our faces, and see the brightness of the clear sky. And we can be reminded that God is all powerful, and God is good, and God is in the business of chasing away the darkness. He's in the business of shining light and love into the world.

Then in the evening, when we see the beauty of the moon or the thrill of a comet, we can feel so small compared to the vast reaches of space. But then we can remember that the Bible promises that not only is God good, but that He is good to me. He brings beauty and joy into my soul. He is in the business of chasing away the darkness in me, and shining light and love into my life.

Then we have the stars...not just movie stars, or star athletes; but all the vast unnumbered stars in heaven are all witnessing to the glory of God. (Alphacentauri is a far bigger star than the one in this magazine!)

And all of the stars of heaven are reminding us of God. And they do so not because God wants to sell Himself to us. No, He wants to give Himself to hs, and He wants us to give ourselves to Him. For He is all powerful, and He is good, and He is in the business of separating the Light from the darkness, and flooding our souls with His light, and His love.
